iscd Foundation Course students can be sure in looking overseas for guidance towards object and spatial design as Laikingland is a creative collaboration based in both the UK and The Netherlands, whose intention is to design and manufacture beautifully crafted kinetic objects that engage, and evoke a sense of play and nostalgia. Their most recent product are the Magnet Mobiles by Ivan Black, which consist of lightweight rotating forms that spiral around magnet and ball bearing mechanisms.

The near frictionless mechanisms allow the Magnet Mobiles to be activated with a simple light blow.

Last night iscd attended the Sun Studios' in Alexandria for the unveiling of two of Australia’s leading design brands collaborating to turn Greek inspirations and red carpet glamour into rugs …and a bit of celebrity spotting too!Undoubtedly Australia’s premier couturier, Alex Perry has added a new level of glamour to our fashion industry with his breathtaking gowns. The designer ‘du jour’ for celebrity red carpet dressing and high society weddings, Alex Perry is at the top of his game. Launching his eponymous label in the 1990’s, Alex’s gowns were instantly acclaimed by the local media including Vogue Australia who rushed feature his jewelled corsets and sexy sheaths in their main fashion shoots. Fast forward twenty years and Alex has launched himself into interiors and his first foray into rug design.

Last night Alex Perry said: “I wanted to pay homage to my Greek heritage striving to create something timeless and striking. Each Design tells a different story, revealing a distinct aspect of Greece and myself.” Yosi Tal, Managing Director of Designer Rugsintroduced Ales and said he has “a certain Jois de vivre and approach to life that is incredibly positive and this reflects in his design ethos. We are very excited to collaborate with another of Australia’s leading designers. His rugs are true to his Greek ancestry and bring a fresh wave of colour to the Designer Rugs collections.”

Hand-made from 100% New Zealand wool, selected pieces feature Luscious pure silk and viscose. Weaving and carving techniques were used to create unique accents and definition.

Alex Perry for Designer Rugs is available in the standard size of 200 x 300 cm and can be custom coloured and sized to suit any interior. Suitable for commercial and residential applications, but what a great inspiration for our 'Foundation Course' Certificate IV in Design students who also complete an industry brief for Designer Rugs as part of their study.

Each year iscd hosts an industry trend event to release their observations on what colours and design styles will mould and shape our homes in the future. If this years predictions are anything to go by, we can expect an African influence to our homewares, sculptural futuristic forms in lighting, strong bold geometric styles to our buildings and the resurgence of water and sky colours and shapes.
iscd do not have a crystal ball! As trend observers we see our role as one of provoking you as designers to think about what we have found and what we see around us and for you to then use these ideas in your work as you see fit। Individuality and creativity are essential to new design, so the last thing we want is for designers to be slaves to fashion – just inspired by it!

A strong black and white geometric theme is appearing, we think as a contrast and reaction to the delicate, illustrative patterns that have heralded the decorative style that replaced minimalism a number of years ago. However it is a combination of vivid hues and neutrals that give the Geometrix style its contemporary look. Strong, bold lines and shapes are appearing on packaging, fabrics, furniture and building facades. A happy trend that will gain momentum in the younger markets.

Optimism and a mood of celebration is reflected in the Vivid Trend. Bright clear colours give a surprising lift to the built environment in particular, but throughout the design world, a vivid rainbow is predicted. This is partly as a reaction to a recent neutral period when white, grey and reduced colours dominated and partly a desire for economic recovery and a happier world. Shiny surfaces and glossy fabrics reflect this mood as does the increased use of lighting and transparent colour.

A new and different theme that is well overdue is our Galactic Palette. The new Space Age is upon us with sharp design features and an unusual range of colours from warm grey to blush pinks in textures as diverse as shiny metals and lush velvets. Sculptural forms in lighting and home wares, repetitive modular shapes and shimmering surfaces will give a futuristic mood to interiors and fashion in particular, but across the design world, the space age is here.

Greenscape is more than a range of green hues। It is a natural palette। Greenscape includes concepts around growth or new sprouts, new ideas and social issues. Areas such as sustainability, recycling and environmental care in design have now been fully integrated into our way of life and are here to stay. So the future will be more about maintaining this awareness and enhancing the ways we protect the world and our resources. In terms of colour design, Greenscape is about a green mood, a feeling for freshness, vitality and growth and evoking natural textures in a variety of ways. It does not mean using bright grassy greens, but working with subtle colours from this palette as shown in this fabric range released at Premiere Vision that incorporates a soft grey green and mustard citrus. It is unusual to find green as a dominant colour in exterior design, but on this fascinating building, a range of yellow greens are embedded within metallic sculptural forms giving an exciting appearance.

Freshwater offers a clean, new palette of cool colours that range from denim to lilac. A refreshing change, this theme represents both water and sky elements in our third natural palette. But as well as offering a new blueness, freshwater also integrates design elements of ripples, curls, waves and woven threads into fashion, fabric and graphics. Combined with white, these blues work well with previously neutral interior environments and continue to enhance the French Provincial and Hamptons Whitewash styles.

Another natural palette, Earthenware offers a strong textured range of colours evoking warmth and safety in a rich palette across all areas of design। Burgundy, terracotta, aubergine, chocolate and mauve are appearing in decorating fabrics, fashion and product design. From a sociological point of view the earth colours give a grounded, nurturing mood. Design elements included in this trend are a wide range of textures, use of natural materials and an emphasis on recycled products. An African style is evident in new textiles, fashion and home wares and Retro design is alive and well, particularly in graphics and furniture.

The Sydney Architecture Festival is a joint venture between the Australian Architecture Association, Australian Institute of Architects (NSW Chapter) and the NSW Architects Registration Board। Our organisations have common ground in our efforts to create a better understanding of architecture. The Sydney Architectural Festival aims to:

· enable the community to participate in and enjoy the history and architecture of Sydney

· engage children and young people in design experiences through competitions and group activities

· contribute to community engagement in relation to the challenges of achieving a sustainable built environment

· promote Sydney’s cultural identity as a contemporary city of quality architecture

· develop partnerships with organisations engaged in activities relevant to our primary objectives of celebration: developing the community’s appreciation and enjoyment of good architecture and education: communicating the importance of good design in achieving a sustainable, healthy and culturally rich built environment.

iscd was invited to be involved in the festival informing and inspiring about the importance of colour in the built environment. iscd will be running workshops throughout the festival.

iscd has stumbled over budding furniture designer Yoav Avinoam. As a graduation major project, he has used wood shavings to create modern, practical, and environmentally conscious furniture — i.e. furniture created from sawdust.

Yoav uses sawdust waste from the Wood industry, he says this is a response to the way we look at our usage and exploitation of materials in modern culture. BOLD STATEMENT!

The sawdust (taken from different kinds of woods) is pressed with resin into a mold that already contains all of the object parts, there is huge opportunity when exploring new ways of integration between the legs of the furniture and the sawdust through expansion of the joints. This, and the way the sawdust crumbles toward the edges, creates a new material esthetics to a once destined to be waste material.

A Day in the Life :: Eat Green Design

Elodie and Luke from iscd were the guests of Inside Out Magazine for a breakfast at Eat Green Design – part of Sydney Design 09.

Eat Green Design is a dining experience, sustainable temporary exhibition and theatrette that features bio-dynamic and organic food and is a space for ideas on sustainable practices in design.

The concept was designed by Cilla Madden from Collaborate while the space was designed by award-winning architect Hannah Tribe and Tribe Studio architects. It also showcases a selection of innovative, sustainable products from independent and emerging eco-designers around Australia including Design By Them, Toby Horrocks, Lightly, Spaceleft and ISM Objects.

The project itself serves to investigate, uncover and make transparent the ‘whole-systems’ behind design while demonstrating that sustainability not only does not compromise design aesthetic or value, but adds a level of sophistication to the design agenda.

At iscd’ recent graduation close to 20 students was acknowledged with High Achievement, having their major works selected and awarded by the Design Industries high profiles. As you read on, we have selected some of the many outstanding entries to share with you.

Daniella Kilov’s story board for an ‘Outdoor Dining’ experience was awarded Murobond’s prestigious Excellence in both Colour Design and Interior Styling, aimed at our multi-talented Dual Diploma graduates.

Mary Maybury’s ‘Rusk International’ hair salon business imaging board was awarded Murobond’s prestigious Pure Colour prize.

Donna Youssef’s creation for a franchised evening bar, suited for the inner city, won her Porter’s Original Paint’s Excellence in Colour Design.

Heather Mead’s take on rejuvenating a therapeutic medical clinic caught the eye of Dulux paint house and won her the Award of Creative Colour Application.

Lisa Lam took home the Laminex Award for Creativity for her French inspired dining style, quaintly titled ‘Le Dauphin’.

Nikki Lisle recently featured in Sydney’s NorthSide Courier for her modern bedroom creation, winning her the Warwick Fabrics Award of Excellence in Interior Styling.

Claudia Maher’s contemporary pattern gave her the Porter’s Original Paint's Wallpaper Design Award for following a brief with original creativity.

Award winning iscd Diploma in Surface Design graduate, Claudia Maher, shows some of her creative work in progress, finding inspiration from natural line work and bright, colourful elements.

Christine Bell’s ‘Fern Ball’ in true repeat and register won her recognition by Mokum Textiles for their Design Award.

Nature, change of seasons, levels of light, the sea, traveling (in particular Paris). Working in collaboration with other creative’s as part of a design team.

What is your signature style?

Sophisticated but eclectic

How did you get to where you are today?

Determination, hard work and an ability to learn from people who inspire me. I have had some wonderful mentoring along the way. The most valuable aspect of my personality would be stamina. To bring Florence’s designs back to life and create a global brand requires masses of stamina and determination. Each year our goals grow so you realize you are never quite “there” yet….

We are a School. What were you like as a student?

Oh my goodness…..apparently quite a distraction! I think my enthusiasm got me into trouble at times. The school I was sent to was not right for me….in hindsight I wish I had the skill to communicate this to my parents and make the necessary changes. I firmly believe if you are not enjoying the journey do something about it. I left school young and a little naive but traveled overseas straight away and never looked back

What makes you smile?

My business partner and amazing husband – David. He can also make me frown but mostly it’s a smile!

Advanced Beauty is an ongoing exploration of digital artworks born and influenced by sound, an ever-growing collaboration between programmers, artists, musicians, animators and architects.

The first collection is a series of audio-reactive 'video sound sculptures'.
Inspired by synasthesia, the rare sensory experience of seeing sound or tasting colours, these videos are physical manifestations of sound, sculpted by volume, pitch or structure of the soundtrack.

The hallowed halls of the International School of Colour and Design have been filled with award winning designs from its celebrated and budding designers.

Twice a year the school presents its students’ body of work for the public to enjoy. iscd have found that these exhibitions work positively in two ways. Firstly, to inspire current and prospective students to perceiver on their own creative journey. Secondly, graduating students are able to showcase their work in an open to the public exhibition.

“It is my biggest reward to see students transform from someone who was timid and afraid to pick up a paint brush to a proud exhibiting and accomplished artist,” says Nikki Donald, Education Manager, iscd. “They have grown in their confidence and trust within themselves and are ready to make the transition from education to application”

All students’ final work has been presented and the top of each specialization are bestowed awards from key industry partners. Examples of industry awards given to iscd students include: Murobond Paints, Resene Paints, Warwick Fabrics, Di Lorenzo Tiles, Laminex, Zepel Fabrics, Porters Original Paints and Mokum Textiles – more industry awards then other design school.

Peter Tasker, of Murobond paints commented “The standard of graduates is very high, making them highly valued in the creative industries and Murobond has employed many graduates over the years”.

The award winner work is currently being showcased in the campus gallery until 31 July 2009, 10.00am to 5.00pm weekdays.

Ashling Power, designer from Lilly and Lolly gives iscd an insight to the design industry.

What or who inspires you?

I am a great collector of magazine clippings, bits of fabrics, books and these live with me until such time I use them for something! I also get inspired by eclectic mixes like modern with antique, ethnic with classic. I think I am ‘Magazine Junky of the Year’ every year.

What is your design philosophy?

I am a believer in clean, bold lines –no clutter. But keep it fun especially when it comes to kids bedrooms. I love clear strong lines and shapes, large panels of solid colour but then mixed with an intricate pattern to throw the whole look slightly off balance. I like a bit of Quirk!How did you get to where you are today?

Blood, sweat and tears, but then a good laugh after the tears. I also attribute our success to the talent of everyone involved with the development our products. It’s definitely the team that makes it work in the end.

What makes you smile?

Cuddles and sloppy kisses in bed with my 3 and 5yr old in morning. I think we will need a bigger bed soon.

What were you like as a student?
I think I was a very stubborn one. But I also worked extremely hard and remember being asked in one of my critiques why I had done so much work. As you can imagine I was slightly amazed at the question but received great mark.

At 23, effervescent Chontelle Samios was the youngest of the homeMADE designers. She completed a Dual Diploma in Colour Design and Interior Styling at the International School of Colour and Design. Congratulations Chontelle!

Cheong House Colour Design Project

Edwina Hirst is a graduate of the International School of Colour and Design and current educator of the iscd Colour Design Diploma. She currently has one of her projects featured in Houses Magazine.

Edwina worked on the interior and exterior colour scheme of Chong House, a Birley Griffin house in Castlecrag, which won the 2008 Willoughby Heritage Award and was Highly Commended at the 2008 National Trust Awards.

The brief for this project was to create a ‘controlled’ palette of colours that preserved Griffin’s vision for the future of Castlecrag, incorporating his deep respect for the natural environment।

While the interior is calm and contemporary, for this project Hirst looked to nature for inspiration for the exterior colour palette। The colours selected were matched to natural outdoor elements such as sandstone and Blackbutt trees।

Hirst designed the complex colour scheme so each individual within the space can experience the whole landscape they are in.

This project demonstrates that as a colour designer there is a need to understand colour beyond how they look in a palette. Whilst working with the clients wishes, colour designers have to understand colour in a holistic view from how they work with one another to working with the environment.

Karie Soehardi, head designer of Ella and Sofia shares a little bit about herself with the International School of Colour and Design. Ella and Sofia, a textile and interiors studio in Australia has been a great industry partner of iscd for many years.

What or who inspires you?

Many things inspire me – there’s William Morris, then all the art deco/ nouveau era, Liberty prints, 70’s fashion, London (just because I love it and there is so much going on everywhere you go) and Indonesian batik.

What is your design philosophy?

To not get caught up in what everyone else is doing, and to get out there and be inspired by ‘things’. I love drawing and taking pics of different random things – what my designs turn out to be may be quite simple but different visuals are important to me.

What is your signature style?

Ella and Sofia’s style has a feel of yesteryear with a contemporary twist! I like eclectic things and not afraid to marry a loud wallpaper with a baroque armchair.

How did you get to where you are today?

A lot of cold -calling, door knocking, mistakes, late nights/weekends, happiness, tears, passion and persistence – if you have a dream you must believe in yourself and give it a go. You owe it to yourself to be as happy and creative as you possibly can.

What makes you smile?

My five and half month old son – he is just amazing and, I finally get what all the other parents were talking about. I am just so grateful that I get to watch him learn about the world.

We are a School. What were you like as a student?
I loved school, was a bit of a nerd when I was younger, Art and English were my favourite classes. In college and uni, I was very determined and passionate. I studied Jewellery and Object Design, then Fashion Design. I think education is so important, both in an establishment and through reading, mentors.

WE LOVE :: Easton Pearson Designer Rugs Collection

Easton Pearson have collaborated with Designer Rugs to create a collection of inspiring and eclectic rugs. This is Easton Pearson’s first foray into the world of floor coverings. “The idea of working with design and textile in this new medium with Designer Rugs was an adventure we couldn’t resist,” said Lydia and Pamela. ”We are passionate about design and fabrication. It was a joy working with the Designer Rugs team and we are delighted with the outcome.”

There are eight rugs in all, featuring a bold powerful colour palette from warm suffused yellows and reds, through to dense violets and grays. . Explain Lydia and Pamela: "We were inspired by fragments of dilapidated antique chintz fabrics; the intricate hand drawn detail and washes of colour. The rugs show our response as an abstraction of the botanical world".

Wow! iscd student Kirrilee Phillips rug design is featured in the July issue of Real Living magazine.

“See a Penny Pick it Up” which Kirrilee designed as part of the Art on the floor competition with Designer Rugs was inspired by nostalgia – finding something with meaning and creating a fresh perspective.

Kirrilee says “Society is becoming much more environmentally aware, and we are looking back to the simplicity of our past, to push forward. The simplicity of my design creates a boldness and almost childlike element – where most nostalgia is drawn from. My design techniques were again quite simple – repetition of shape and cropping with an asymmetrical composition”

Fashion and costume designer Bowie Wong is collaborating with one of Australia’s leading brands, Porter’s Paints, in an exciting new range of wallpaper designs. Bowie is the first fashion designer in Australasia to design and launch a range of wallpaper. Bowie’s designs will be the first in a new series of wallpapers called Designers for Porter’s Paints.

My collections are all about stories,” said Bowie. “I like to create a world with my work that allows my customers to wear their stories. It is sophistication interlaced with imagination.”

iscd award winning Surface Design graduate worked with Bowie on this project.

BOWIE has designed his unique range of designs based on the four seasons with each design portraying a specific season. The designs are available in two colours ways.

AUTUMN - “Looking down from above, chrysanthemums covered the deep red earth। It was then I appreciated the inherent beauty of aboriginal art.”

FOUR SEASONS - “Looking through the kaleidoscope, the four seasons came to life. The flowers bloomed, the leaves turned red and the snow – peaked mountaintop rose to the sun.”

Rachel Fairfax Solo Exhibition

International School of Colour and Design educator Rachel Fairfax is exhibiting her work at a solo show at the Ray Hughes Gallery. Her exhibition is titled 'Ocean Paintings'.

The show officially opens Friday 22^nd May at 6.00pm and runs until 24^th June.

Rachel Fairfax is an emerging Sydney artist. She studied at the National Art School, completing an Honours in Drawing in 2002. She has won two Reg Richardson Scholarships which supported two residencies at Hill End in 2003, she was awarded a Highly Commended at the 2004 Waverley Art Prize and won the 2005 FONAS Infusion Barry Stern Galleries Prize.

Her work is held in collections of ArtBank and private collections of Tetsuya’s Restaurant, Defiance Gallery Collection, Ray Hughes Gallery Collection, Reg Richardson and Jonathan Self Private collection.

Rachel loves sharing her knowledge with the students of the International School of Colour and Design.

Congratulations and Good luck to the two iscd graduates competing in the homeMADE - the biggest renovation competition ever seen on television VODICKA and CHONTELLE SAMIOS both studied at the international School of Colour and Design.

Each week the talented homeMADE designers are split into two teams, one per house. Their challenge is to meet their client’s brief while making the finished result spectacular and unique: a space that will not only impress the family but also wow the judges. And it’s not just one room – the WHOLE house must be done in five days.

ANNIE VODICKA is the oldest competitor in homeMADE but she’s get energy to burn.

After more than 20 years in the aviation industry, as a flight attendant and onboard manager, she satisfied a lifelong passion for interiors by completing a degree in interior design at the International School of Colour and Design. While she’s already tested out her new-found skills on friends and family, she hopes homeMADE will kick-start a long and brilliant career.

Annie says her style is contemporary but eclectic. She also loves a touch of extravagance. “I’m a bit of a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. I love to create beauty within the confines of a budget but I can’t help injecting a bit of luxury and extravagance,” she says.

At 23, effervescent CHONTELLE SAMIOS is the youngest of the homeMADE designers. She has already completed two diplomas in interior design and styling at iscd, renovated her property from top to bottom, started her own design firm, Elles InDesign, based in Sydney’s southern suburbs, and managed to win an impressive mix of residential and commercial clients – all in just one year as a professional designer.

She describes her style as modern French provincial. She loves to mix creams and decorative items such as lace and combine them with modern furnishings and charcoal accents.

I really am glad I’ve taken the time to put ‘pen to paper’. There is nothing really quite like it to clarify one’s thoughts.

It’s one week and a day since my day trip to Designex. Although I could have shared my thoughts then, it made much more sense to see what inspired others. Ask Sharon Raco about the fridges in the bedside tables! If you’ve had a look at SMH ‘Essential’ lift out this week, you’ll find their description of the ‘plethora of great new ideas’ exposed to the design arena this year। The article opens with the words, ‘ Don’t let the Global Financial Crisis get you down’. It didn’t it get me down- but I did notice how many usual exhibitors had chosen to stay at home. It’s clear that for many companies collaboration and spending the money on In-House promotion this year may be the way to go.

As you probably know, four of our students were short listed for the Dulux Colour awards. No prizes for guessing that I spent quite some time looking at the Award winners for each category. Why don’t you have a look at the winning entries on the Dulux website?

Just can’t help thinking that we could at least double the number of entries for 2010 awards.

Also, I think you should have a look at Spacecraft Australia. Stewart Russell, the artist and owner of the business says, ‘his ideas are often driven by a fascination for traditional textile design and new directions in contemporary art’. They launched their new ARTPLAY seat and table which were used as seating in the Michael Mc Cann designed social centre of the event, the fantastic organic looking Cardboard Bar.

All our emerging light designers studying Foundation Course must see Marc Pascal. Now he is one creative man!

Very exciting to see the standout Funkis wallpapers and even more so because I’ve recently specified one for a guest bathroom.

Sometimes I think about arranging to go to Designex with someone and then remember how it’s always just like a huge ISCD event off campus. What an ideal alumni meeting!

Art on the Floor winner announced

Zanny Maybury of Mosman was announced the winner from five finalists who have had their designs crafted into Designer Rugs pieces. These inspiring works will be showcased at the International School of Colour and Design (iscd) campus until May 30, 2009.

The exhibition was officially opened by Wendy Moore, editor of Australian Home Beautiful who was also on the salubrious panel of judges.

Zanny’s entry, entitled “Zan 2” was chosen because it displayed a dynamic warm palette creating energy and excitement mixed with very original design techniques, commented the International School of Colour and Design (iscd)’s founding director and serene queen of colour Prue Royle who was also on the judging panel.

“We developed Art on the Floor to give the International School of Colour and Design (iscd) students the opportunity to learn about the commercialisation of creative inspiration’’ outlined Yosi Tal Director of Designer Rugs. “It’s everything really if you want to make a career from your creativity. I am always excited to see the designs come through from the International School of Colour and Design (iscd) as their students have a very advanced understanding of colour’’.

Zanny enrolled at the International School of Colour and Design (iscd) because although she knew she wanted to do something creative, she had little idea of what direction she should take. Taking the International School of Colour and Design (iscd) foundation course has given Zanny both inspiration, direction and an extensive portfolio of work for the future.
